In this chapter, Alex meets up with Diana inside the cave system, where they try to uncover more evidence about the "Tikpak written language" - but instead, end up running into Clare, whose notebook Diana... manages to pilfer for additional clues. Later on, Alex continues to spy on Clare, but comes out into the open when he finds himself obligated to save Clare's life from an untimely sprung trap, earning a bit of the redheaded archaeologist's trust and affection in the process. Meanwhile, an unfortunate accident with a pesky rat triggers Janet's maternal instinct as she takes Alex to Dr. Amor's hospital... where, much to his embarrassment, Alex's major health issue is revealed to his Mom in all of its bulky, veined glory!
